Niagara Falls, New York | Summer 2022

Niagara Falls is one of those places you think “yeah another falls”, until you’re standing there in real life, watching water thunder over the edge without pause.
This trip was intentionally simple. No packed itinerary. No pressure to see everything. Just a one-day escape from NYC to experience something undeniably powerful and completely different from city life.
Quick Trip Details
Route: NYC → Buffalo → Niagara Falls (NY side)
Flight: Early morning departure
Trip Length: One day
Must-Do: Maid of the Mist
Why Go: Big nature, zero overplanning
From NYC to Niagara Falls: An Early Start
I caught an early morning flight from NYC to Buffalo, landing just as the day was waking up. From the airport, I hopped on a local bus headed toward Buffalo city.
The bus ride, though, was eye-opening.
As we drove from the airport, the neighborhoods felt far removed from NYC. Buffalo city is quieter, slower and shaped by a very different economic reality.
First Glimpse of the Falls
After checking into my hotel, grabbing a quick snack, and dropping my bag, I made a beeline for Niagara Falls State Park.
You hear the falls before you see them.
The sound is constant and commanding, deep, thunderous and impossible to ignore. Then the view opens up and suddenly the water is everywhere, rushing over the edge without pause. It’s wide, powerful and mesmerizing in a way photos never fully capture.
This wasn’t a quick glance-and-go moment. I stood there longer than expected, watching the water crash endlessly below.
Into the Mist
The highlight of the day was easily the Maid of the Mist boat tour.
The boat takes you straight into the heart of the falls and once you’re there, it’s pure sensory overload. Wind whipping. Mist soaking everything. The roar of the water surrounding you from all sides. It’s intense, exhilarating and unforgettable.
From the New York side, you can clearly see Canada across the river, with boats moving in and out on both sides.

Walking the Park & Slowing Down
After the boat tour, I wandered through Niagara Falls State Park, stopping at different viewpoints and visiting the nearby museum.
No matter where you walk, the sound of the water follows you. It becomes background noise, then a steady companion. I also had one of those unexpected travel moments, realizing how simple the U.S.–Canada border looks here. The Rainbow Bridge stretched across the river, with people casually walking back and forth, a far cry from the intimidating border-crossing stories we often hear.

Wrapping Up & Heading Back
Later that evening, I grabbed Indian food and took the bus back to my hotel. After a full day filled with movement, noise and natural intensity, sitting down for a warm, comforting meal felt like the perfect way to end it.
The next morning, I headed straight back to NYC.
Just one day. One destination. And absolutely worth it.
