Tobago, Trinidad and Tobago | Summer 2024

When every flight between Trinidad and Tobago showed fully booked in Summer 2024, what started as a logistical headache pushed us toward the ferry and honestly, it worked out better than expected.
That one roadblock turned into a three-day Tobago trip that felt slower, easier and exactly what we needed. From driving through Black Rock’s narrow roads to finding some of the best local food in Crown Point, this ended up being less of a rushed getaway and more of a reminder that Tobago isn’t a place you force. It’s one you settle into.
If you’re planning a short Tobago trip, this 3 day itinerary is exactly how it unfolded.
Getting There: Why the Ferry to Tobago Was Actually the Best Option
Our trip started with the ferry from Port of Spain to Scarborough, mainly because we didn’t have a choice. Every flight was booked. It turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip.
There’s something about being on the water for a few hours that forces you to slow down before you even arrive. The breeze, the views, even the slight chaos of boarding last minute all sets the tone.
Once we got to Tobago, we rented a car and if you’re planning your own trip, do the same. You can also bring your car on the ferry, which is always better.
Where We Stayed in Tobago (And Why Black Rock Just Works)
We stayed at Le Grand Courlan Spa and Resort in Black Rock, it ended up being one of the best decisions of the trip.
It’s quieter than Crown Point but still close enough to everything:
- Easy access to beaches
- Short drive to restaurants
- Calm, local feel
August is shoulder season, so the hotel felt almost empty, in a good way. Ocean views, constant breeze and a pool that actually felt like somewhere you’d want to spend time after a long day out.
If you’re deciding where to stay in Tobago, this area hits that balance between convenience and peace.
Day 1: Waterfalls, Winding Roads and That First Beach Sunset
With the car secured, we didn’t waste time. Our first stop was Argyle Waterfall, the tallest on the island and worth every step of the short hike. The pools at the top were exactly what you’d hope for after walking in the heat and it felt like the perfect way to start the trip without doing too much.
From there, we drove up to Speyside Lookout. By the time we made it back down to town, hunger had fully set in, so we headed toward Crown Point for dinner.
By the end we were happily exhausted and a bit lost as I reminded myself (again) that Waze exists for a reason, maybe getting back to town shouldn’t be a game of ‘which road feels right today.

Things to Do in Tobago
(Based on This Trip)
If you’re planning your own version of this itinerary, these were the standouts:
Black Rock Beach at sunset
Argyle Waterfall
Speyside Lookout
Buccoo Reef + Nylon Pool
No Man’s Land
Crown Point (for food and beach access)
Day 2: BBB: Buccoo, Boat Rides and BBQ
Day two was all about the water.
We made our way to Buccoo for a glass-bottom boat tour, which sounds touristy and it is but it’s still worth doing. Floating over coral reefs, stopping at Nylon Pool and visiting No Man’s Land… it’s one of those experiences that reminds you why Tobago stands out.
Back at the beach we got Lunch was at Chef’s BBQ in Crown Point and this reminded me of my childhood trip to Tobago. BBQ pigtail, macaroni salad, mashed potatoes, exactly what you want after being out in the sun all morning.
We spent the rest of the day just moving around slowly, no real plan, which honestly worked better than trying to pack too much in.

Day 3: A Farewell to Paradise
By the last day, Tobago had already done what it needed to do. We kept the morning simple, spent some time in Crown Point , grabbed food and just enjoyed not being in a rush.
Then it was time to head back to the ferry. Somewhere between leaving the island and watching it fade into the distance, the thought hit: I could actually stay here longer.
Staying at Le Grand Courlan Spa Resort
We stayed at Le Grand Courlan Spa Resort in Black Rock and it quietly became one of our favourite parts of the trip. August is Tobago’s shoulder season, so there weren’t many guests around, which made everything feel that much more relaxed. The resort sits on a hillside, so from our balcony we had a clear view straight out to the ocean with a constant breeze rolling in off the water.
The pool was clean, never crowded and after a full day out in the heat, jumping in felt like the best decision we’d made all day. There’s a restaurant and bar on site, which we were grateful for on the evenings we came back too tired to go anywhere. They also have a spa we never got around to using, but if that’s your thing, it’s there waiting for you.
