It was still dark when I arrived at the ferry terminal in Port of Spain and just early enough to wonder if I can get doubles for breakfast. The terminal buzzed with sleepy travelers, families and the occasional person who looked way too alert for 5:00 AM.

We had booked the premium cabin, which is located at the front of the vessel and offers panoramic ocean views.

Inside, the premium cabin was quiet and spacious, with wide seats and enough window to make you forget you weren’t flying. There were light refreshments, drinks and snack items available for purchase. I got a cup of coffee to past time.

The ferry ride took just under four hours, but it didn’t feel long. We alternated between sipping coffee, staring at the horizon and sleeping.

When we docked in Scarborough, we hopped into a waiting taxi and made our way to the car rental location at the airport. Tobago was waking up, the sun fully out, sky bright and adventure already calling.

Whether you’re trying to escape flying or just want a scenic, slow travel option, the ferry between Trinidad and Tobago delivers.

Tobago Ferry Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the ferry ride from Trinidad to Tobago?

The ferry ride usually takes between 2.5 and 4 hours, depending on the vessel and sea conditions. On a calm day, the journey can feel surprisingly quick, especially if you grab a good seat, enjoy the views, or catch up on a movie or nap along the way.

Where do I book Tobago ferry tickets?

You can book your ferry tickets online through the official TTIT Ferry booking website. If you’re travelling during Carnival, Easter, long weekends or school holidays, I recommend booking as early as possible because popular sailings can sell out fast.

How far in advance should I book the Tobago ferry?

The earlier, the better especially during peak travel periods. For holiday weekends and major events, try to book a few weeks ahead if you can. Tobago is a favourite getaway for locals, so ferry tickets can disappear quickly.

How early should I arrive before departure?

Arrive at least an hour before departure and even earlier if you’re travelling with a vehicle.

Can I take a car on the Tobago ferry?

Yes! One of the biggest advantages of taking the ferry is being able to bring your vehicle with you. Make sure you reserve a vehicle space when booking since spots are limited.

Does the Tobago ferry get rough?

It can. Some crossings are smooth and relaxing, while others can be a bit choppy depending on the weather and sea conditions. If you’re sensitive to motion sickness, it’s worth preparing just in case.

What can I do if I get seasick?

If you’re prone to seasickness, consider taking motion sickness medication before boarding. Sitting near the middle of the vessel, staying hydrated and focusing on the horizon can also help. I always recommend being prepared, even if the forecast looks good.

Is the Tobago ferry better than flying?

It really depends on your travel style. Flying is much faster, but the ferry is usually more affordable and gives you the option to bring your vehicle and extra luggage. If you’re planning to explore Tobago at your own pace, the ferry can be a great choice.

What is the difference between Economy and Premium seating?

Economy seating is the standard option and works well for most travellers. Premium seating offers a little more comfort, including larger seats and a quieter environment at the front of the ship.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed journey, Premium may be worth the upgrade.
