If you’re trying to get from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana without paying for an expensive private transfer, taking the bus is one of the cheapest and easiest options.

While visiting the Dominican Republic, I traveled from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana using Expreso Punta Cana and found the process straightforward, even as a solo traveler. Here’s what to expect, how much it costs and a few tips that can help you avoid missing your stop.

Arrive Earlier Than You Think

If you’re planning to travel on a weekend, arrive at least an hour and a half before the bus you want to take.

I arrived at the Expreso Punta Cana station around 9:00 AM hoping to catch the 9:30 AM bus and it was sold out. There were only a few seats left on the 10:30 AM departure, so I purchased one of those instead.

The ticket cost 600 Dominican pesos, making it one of the best transportation deals to get to Punta Cana.

Based on what I saw, buying tickets the same day seems to be the norm. There is an option to buy online, but most of the passengers purchased their tickets at the station.

Where to Catch the Bus

The bus departs from Santo Domingo Parque Enriquillo first, then makes a stop to pick up additional passengers at Sabana Larga before getting on the highway towards Punta Cana. You can buy tickets at either location.

I recommend saving the station location in Google Maps before heading out, especially if you’re relying on Uber or local transportation to get there.

Another Option: Transporte APTPRA

Another company that operates the Santo Domingo to Punta Cana route is Transporte APTPRA. It seemed pretty popular because the next departure was already sold out when I got there. If comfort is a priority, check it out.

What the Bus Ride Is Like

The journey takes around three to four hours depending on traffic and stops along the way.

The seats aren’t luxury coach seats, but they’re comfortable enough for the trip.

The bus contained mainly locals with a bit of foreigners sprinkled in. Outside of travelers watching videos on their phones without headphones, there wasn’t much action happening during the ride. At one of the toll booths, a vendor hopped on selling snacks and juices before getting off again at the next stop.

Other than that, it was a pretty uneventful journey, which is exactly what you want from a long bus ride.

Where Does the Bus Stop in Punta Cana?

The bus makes several stops throughout the Punta Cana area, including:

• BlueMall Punta Cana
• Punta Cana Airport area
• Plaza Velero
• Bávaro
• Veron
• Various locations along the main road
• Friusa

Depending on where you’re staying, you may need a short Uber or Poppi Express ride from the bus stop to your hotel.

How I Got to My Hotel

Before getting on the bus, I showed the location of my accommodation to the bus conductor (the guy packing the bags). He then told me the name of the stop where I needed to get off. It’s important to repeat the name of the stop a few times to yourself because once he starts rambling off the stops in Spanish, it goes by so fast that you could easily miss your stop if you’re not paying attention. I took a screenshot of the area and tracked the bus on Google Maps once we passed Punta Cana Airport.

When we reached the junction on the main road closest to HM Bavaro Beach Hotel, I got off the bus and walked the rest of the way.

If your accommodation isn’t directly on the main road, I highly recommend showing the conductor the exact location before departure. It makes it much easier to know where to get off.

Is the Santo Domingo to Punta Cana Bus Worth It?

For just 600 pesos, the buses are one of the most affordable ways to travel between Santo Domingo and Punta Cana. It’s not luxury transportation, but it’s comfortable enough, easy to use and a great option for budget travelers, backpackers and solo travelers who don’t want to spend a fortune on private transportation.

As long as you arrive early, save your accommodation details offline and don’t mind a little adventure, getting from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana by bus is a breeze.
