Punta Cana, Dominican Republic | June 2026

After spending a few days exploring Santo Domingo, I was ready to trade the city’s streets for a few relaxing days by the beach. If you’re planning the same itinerary, I recommend spending a couple of days in the capital first or visiting on a day trip. I put together my Santo Domingo tour and self-guided route with the places I visited and a Google Map so you can explore them on your own.

After arriving in Punta Cana, I knew I didn’t want to stay at one of the huge all-inclusive resorts where you never have to leave the property. Since I planned to spend most of my time at the beach, relaxing by the pool and exploring the area, I was looking for a smaller adults-only hotel just steps from the ocean. That’s how I ended up booking HM Bávaro Beach Hotel.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Punta Cana in June was the smaller crowds. There were always beach chairs available, the pools never felt busy and the hotel had a much more relaxed atmosphere. The downside, however, was sargassum season.

Checking Into HM Bávaro Beach

Check-in was quick and while waiting for my room, I was offered a welcome drink. A few minutes after settling in, there was another surprise waiting at the door, a plate of fresh fruit and a bottle of sparkling wine. It was a thoughtful touch after the trip from Santo Domingo and a nice way to start my stay.

One of the first things that stood out was how small HM Bávaro Beach felt compared to the large resorts nearby. Directly across the street is Whala! Bávaro, a much larger all-inclusive property, but HM Bávaro has a much quieter atmosphere. That was exactly what I was looking for. Instead of dozens of restaurants, oversized entertainment areas and crowds of people everywhere, the hotel felt calm and relaxed. After a few busy days exploring Santo Domingo, it was the perfect place to slow down.

My Room

My room overlooked one of the pools and had a small balcony, which was a nice spot to enjoy a quiet morning before heading out for the day. The room itself is on the smaller side but honestly, I didn’t mind because I wasn’t in it very much. Most of my time was spent at the beach, relaxing by the rooftop pool, or exploring Punta Cana, so all I really needed was a comfortable place to sleep.

The room was clean, the bed was comfortable and it had everything I needed for my stay. The only thing that caught me off guard was the shower. The hotel uses saltwater instead of freshwater, which apparently isn’t unusual for some beachfront hotels in Punta Cana. It wasn’t a dealbreaker, but after spending the day in the ocean, another saltwater shower definitely wasn’t what I was expecting. It’s one of those little details I wish I had known before arriving.

The Beach, Seaweed & Why I Still Enjoyed My Stay

The biggest reason I booked HM Bávaro Beach was because it’s right on the beach. Just walk out of the hotel and you’re there. Beach chairs and umbrellas are included, and the beachfront is shared with Whala! Bávaro, the sister property across the street. Half of the chairs are reserved for HM guests and the other half for Whala! guests. Since I visited during the shoulder season, I never had trouble finding a chair.

Since I visited in June during Punta Cana’s shoulder season, I never had trouble finding a beach chair. There were always plenty available and the beach never felt crowded. From what I heard, it’s a completely different experience during the busy season, when chairs fill up much earlier and the beach gets a lot busier. Visiting in June definitely had its advantages.

Now for the biggest downside of my stay… the seaweed.

I knew June was sargassum season, but oh boy, there was a lot more than I expected. Every day I watched workers cleaning the beach, but there was still plenty of seaweed along the shoreline in front of the hotel. One thing I noticed was that some of the neighboring resorts had much cleaner sections of beach. So after relaxing on HM Bávaro’s beach chairs, I’d simply walk a little farther down before getting into the ocean.

The seaweed didn’t ruin my trip, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind if you’re planning a summer visit. If you’re traveling to Punta Cana between April and August, I’d recommend checking recent beach photos before booking. Seaweed conditions can change throughout the season, so what I experienced in June may not be what you experience.

My Favorite Part of the Hotel

If I had to pick one thing that would make me stay here again, it would be the rooftop infinity pool. The hotel has two pools, one on the ground floor near the entrance and another on the fifth floor overlooking the ocean. It didn’t take long for the rooftop pool to become my favorite place to relax. The restaurant is right beside it, so ordering lunch or a drink without leaving my chair made it even harder to leave.

Since I visited during the shoulder season, it was never crowded. Some afternoons it felt like I had the whole place to myself. Between the ocean views and the quieter atmosphere, I found myself spending far more time at the rooftop pool than the one on the ground floor.

Outside of the beach, the pools and the hotel’s two restaurants, there isn’t a whole lot to do on the property and honestly, that was perfectly fine with me. I wasn’t looking for a resort packed with activities every hour of the day. After spending my days at the beach or exploring Punta Cana, coming back to a quiet hotel, some evening entertainment and a rooftop pool was exactly what I wanted.

A Better Beach? Visit Playa Macao

After asking one of the hotel employees where I could find clearer water, they recommended Playa Macao, saying it usually has much less seaweed than Bávaro Beach. I’m glad I took their advice because it ended up being one of my favorite beaches during the trip.

Playa Macao is about a 30-minute drive from HM Bávaro Beach and the difference was immediately noticeable. The water was much clearer, there was very little seaweed and it looked much closer to the turquoise Caribbean beaches most people picture when they think of Punta Cana. If you’re staying at Bávaro during the summer months, I’d definitely recommend setting aside a few hours to visit Playa Macao. It was well worth the trip.

Things to Know Before Booking Again

After spending a few days at HM Bávaro Beach, there are a few things I wish I had known before booking. None of them would have changed my decision to stay here but they definitely would have helped me know what to expect.

• Visited: June during Punta Cana’s shoulder season, so the hotel was quiet and never felt overcrowded.
• Shower water: The hotel uses saltwater instead of freshwater.
• Rooms: They’re on the smaller side but that wasn’t an issue since most of my time was spent at the beach, by the pool or exploring Punta Cana.
• Best feature: The rooftop infinity pool was easily my favorite part of the hotel.
• Beach: The beach is shared with Whala! Bávaro, but I never had trouble finding a chair during my stay.
• Seaweed: If you’re visiting between April and August, check recent beach photos before booking since conditions can change throughout the season.
• Bonus tip: If you’re looking for crystal-clear water, set aside a few hours to visit Playa Macao. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the hotel.
• Atmosphere: This is a quiet adults-only hotel, making it a good choice if you’re looking to relax rather than stay at a resort with nonstop entertainment.
