Friends For The Road
Friends For The Road is a good choice if you want a more traditional J’ouvert experience. Their Mud Mas brings together paint, mud, music and traditional Carnival characters, including Moko Jumbies, Jab Jabs and the Laventille Rhythm Section.

What Is J’ouvert?
J’ouvert is the traditional opening of Carnival Monday in Trinidad and Tobago. The word is associated with the French jour ouvert, or daybreak. It makes sense once you experience it: this is Carnival happening as the night gives way to morning, with people gathering before sunrise and heading onto the road as the first light appears.
J’ouvert is much more than a party where somebody throws paint on you. It comes out of the long history of Trinidad Carnival and the traditions that developed around Canboulay, Emancipation, music, masquerade and resistance. NALIS notes that after the abolition of Canboulay in 1884, J’ouvert became well established as a dawn Monday celebration.
Today, organized bands can have T-shirts, wristbands, bars, music trucks and all-inclusive packages. But the feeling is very different from Pretty Mas. Nobody is worrying about keeping feathers clean or making sure a costume looks perfect for the camera.
J’ouvert is Carnival before it gets dressed.
A Little History of J’ouvert
To understand why J’ouvert feels so different from the polished Carnival experience you see in photographs, you have to go back a little. Trinidad Carnival developed from several cultural traditions, including the pre-Lenten celebrations brought by French settlers and African traditions that grew under slavery and became even more prominent after Emancipation in 1838.
Carnival was not simply a party. It became a way for people to express identity, creativity and freedom.
That history is still visible on the road today. Traditional characters such as Jab Molassie and Moko Jumbies, rhythm sections, mud, colour and the general freedom of the celebration all connect today’s J’ouvert to the much longer story of Trinidad Carnival.
It is messy, loud, joyful and free, but there is a whole lot of history underneath it.
J’ouvert Hasn’t Changed as Much as You Think
One of the things I like most about J’ouvert is that, even with all the changes to Trinidad Carnival over the years, the basic experience has stayed remarkably familiar. You get up while it is still dark, meet your friends, find your band, listen for the music and eventually make your way onto the road.
Historically, J’ouvert has been associated with a very early start, with the modern Carnival opening traditionally taking place around 4 a.m. Individual bands may build their own schedules around a pre-party, collection point or gathering time, so always check the official information for the band you choose.
What has changed is the level of organization around the experience. Modern J’ouvert bands can have music trucks, organized bars, breakfast, security, medics, bathrooms, water trucks and other services that make the morning easier to manage.
What Do J’ouvert Bands Usually Include?
If you are comparing J’ouvert packages for the first time, you will notice that many bands offer an all-inclusive morning where the band takes care of most of what you need once you get onto the road.

If you want an organized experience, some J’ouvert bands cost under US$50, while larger all-inclusive experiences can cost considerably more depending on what is included.

What Should You Wear to J’ouvert?
This is probably the easiest Carnival packing advice I can give you: wear something you are completely comfortable destroying. J’ouvert is not the morning to wear your favourite outfit, expensive sneakers or anything you hope to use again on Tuesday.
Even if your band gives you a T-shirt, jersey or other piece of wear, you will still want something underneath that you don’t mind covering in paint, powder, mud and water.

Can You Do J’ouvert and Monday Mas?
Absolutely. Plenty of people do both. The trick is remembering that Carnival Monday is going to be a very long day.
You can start with J’ouvert while it is still dark, head back to your hotel or guesthouse to shower and change, get some food and hopefully catch a little sleep before getting ready for Pretty Mas later in the day.
J’ouvert → Home → Shower → Nap → Monday Carnival Wear → Meet Your Band → Monday Night Mas → Home
That sounds very reasonable when you write it down. In reality, you may be running on Carnival energy by the time you get to the second half of the day. Eat properly, drink water and don’t underestimate how much being on your feet from the early morning will take out of you.
Why J’ouvert Is Still One of the Best Parts of Carnival
There are bigger costumes, bigger trucks and bigger parties, but J’ouvert has a feeling that is difficult to recreate anywhere else.
You are outside before sunrise, the city is still waking up and the music is already moving through the streets. People who may not know each other are dancing together, everybody is covered in paint and powder, and nobody is particularly concerned about looking polished.
And underneath all that fun is the history. J’ouvert grew out of the traditions that shaped Trinidad Carnival, including the cultural expression that developed around Canboulay and the celebrations that followed Emancipation.
